First, the translation. In Australia we say benchtop; the rest of the world says countertop. Countertop protection film, benchtop protection film and stone surface protection film are the same product: an optically clear, self-healing layer fitted over the stone so stains, acids, scratches and heat marks never reach it. If you've been searching both words and finding the same confusing mix of results, this is the plain-English version of what an installation actually involves.
Before anything touches the stone
A proper install starts with the stone, not the film. Marble, quartzite, granite, limestone, travertine and engineered quartz all behave differently, and the finish matters as much as the stone: polished tops take a gloss film to keep the mirror, honed and matte tops take satin to keep their soft look. This is also the honesty checkpoint. Deeply textured finishes need assessing in person, not every edge profile can be covered, and some stones don't need film at all. You should hear all of that before you pay, not after.
The install itself
The surface is cleaned back to bare, dust-free stone, because anything left behind would live under an optically clear layer forever. Then the film is laid out against the actual benchtop and every panel is measured and cut by hand on the day: around sinks, taps, corners and edges, curves included. Nothing is pre-cut somewhere else and hoped into place. The film is worked onto the stone without harsh chemicals, the edges are finished, and the layer effectively disappears.

A note on granite
Granite deserves its own paragraph, because it gets oversold. Granite rarely etches, and plenty of granite owners only need a sensible sealing routine. Where granite benchtop protection film earns its place is stain insurance on lighter granites, scratch protection on working kitchens, and set-and-forget peace of mind. Who does this work?
Not general trades. Fitting film to natural stone is specialist work, and only a handful of installers in Australia do it full time. Whoever you talk to, run the same checklist: the film should be a non-yellowing class, the warranty should be in writing with the exclusions shown up front, and every panel should be measured and cut by hand against your stone.
